I keep going forward

Today I contacted Kathy Sherman of the Hillside Learning Center here in Boulder. It is a private school that is a 3 hours a day program that supplements public school. I get the impression that they spend half the day at their regular school, half at Hillside. The program isn't meant for the long term - a kid might need to do 18 months - 3 years to get up to speed. They specialize in kids with dyslexia, ADD, and ADHD. I'm going to talk with her on the phone tomorrow and arrange a visit to the school.

It's hard for me to visualize how the kid manages the half-day thing. Wouldn't you feel like you are missing out on what your classmates are doing in your regular class? I'm very interested in seeing how it works. I've heard it is very expensive. I saw information on their summer program, which is $24 per hour. Let's see - 3 hours a day x 5 days a week x...= $360 a week.

Shit.

That is very expensive. How do people afford this stuff?

I was just reading the employment ads for the university where I work. I saw a job that made me just want to completely get out of what I'm doing and go do it. It's a technical coordinator for faculty and staff at the School of Music. Not desktop support, but more like training and consulting on Learning Management software, like WebCT, Sakai and some other applications. Music means a lot to me, and the idea of helping the music faculty is very appealing. I miss being more hands on than I am now.

Except, they only want someone part-time. Ok, I'm more than willing to do that. It would give me time to manage Adrian's stuff. And, it only pays about $30k. let's see.....that's $80K less than I make now.....

What have I done.

Maybe I need a semi-long term plan. Work my way out of this salary somehow. Just a little more slowly. ?

I long for meaning. Always have. I get it at the church I've been attending. I walk out of there feeling good, most of the time. And I want to change some things. #1 being my job, another being being able to spend more time making healthy food for my kids, and helping them find their way. D. needs me as much as A. right now. I'm having lots of fun being her music mentor right now.

Hi there, it's Liz from I Speak of Dreams. I came over from the technorati link.

Good for you for jumping on your boy's issues earlier, rather than later.

I have two suggestions for you:

1. Join the SchwabLearning Parents' Discussion Board

http://schwablearning.org/message_boards/index.asp

Look into the Barton Method of Reading and Spelling.

http://www.bartonreading.com/

(note--when you click on the link, a video presentation from Susan Barton automatically starts. You can shut them off, but you might take the time to watch when it is convenient for you. Excellent advice and orientation).

My dyslexic daughter is a 3.0+ student at a demanding college prep, and will be starting college in the fall....thanks to early, effective remediation, similar to the Barton program.
